About Us
The backbone of the farm is dairy, with all other enterprises connected to and synergistic with milk production. In addition to the dairy we produce certified organic pastured poultry, which includes both broilers and turkey; grass-fed beef, pastured pork, pick-your-own strawberries, and compost.

About Us
Just a Few Acres is a 45 acre seventh generation family farm in Lansing, in operation since 1804. We are a diversified livestock farm, providing high quality, healthy meats directly to consumers in our community. All our livestock is grown using a grass-based diet, and we focus on a low-stress life for our animals. We operate our farm using sustainable practices, building healthier soil every year through innovative grazing methods. We believe a small family farm can still be a viable business in today’s “bigger is better” world, and that small farms supplying locally grown food to their communities can create a more resilient, healthy, and meaningful agricultural system.

About Us
Back in 2008, after about 30 years of hosting Thanksgiving dinner for 30 or so friends and family, we decided it was time to raise our own fresh organic turkey for this special feast. We wanted to utilize more of our 160 acres, and in some small way, contribute to the growing movement for local, sustainable, organic food. Fortunately, raising our own heritage turkeys has profoundly increased the depth of our appreciation for all our food, especially that from animals.
We’re proud of the fact that we are now able to sustainably farm our own flock. They breed naturally – no artificial insemination necessary. The eggs are laid in the field and then hatched safely in an incubator. They grow slowly and safely, moving freely outside in 5 rotational pastures protected from predators, vigorously eating organic feed, grass and insects during the day and roosting undercover at night.
Our type of turkey farming differs significantly from large-scale commercial turkey production, where the non-heritage breed Broad (Large) Breasted Whites must be bred via artificial insemination. These birds, because of their extra large breasts, are unable to run and fly. Currently 99.9% of turkey meat consumed in the USA comes from Broad Breasted Whites farmed this way. Due to selective breeding, meat on these birds grows about two times faster than heritage breeds. This means they can be harvested sooner and sold more cheaply than heritage turkeys, especially heritage turkeys like ours that are fed pricey organic feed.
Due in large part to the low price advantage of non-heritage breed turkey farming, heritage breed turkeys were on the verge of extinction by the 1990s. By raising heritage breed turkeys we’re helping preserve the genetics of precious older domesticated breeds. “You have to eat a breed to save a breed,” as they say.
But of the many good reasons that motivate us to do the hard work required to successfully raise our turkeys we think the best reason is their superior flavor. Heritage breeds taste like a turkey should – juicy with deep rich superior flavor! Try one, or a few, and know you’ll be supporting local sustainable farming, heritage breed preservation, and the Slow Food movement.
