About Us
"Origins:
Knapp Farm was founded in 1796 by Jacob Lowman. Jacob Lowman, originally from Middletown, PA, purchased the land that would become his farm from Captain John Spaulding, a revolutionary war soldier and veteran of the Battle of Newtown. Fully half of the land that the farm sits on has been designated as part of the Battle of Newtown battlefield. Jacob Lowman first built himself a log cabin and began clearing the land for farming. Then, in 1819, he built a larger home in the Federal style. The Knapp family still occupies this home today. Jacob had seven children and built homes for several of them near his original homestead. These houses still stand today. His son Edward opened the Lowman Rye Whisky distillery and produced whiskey from rye grown on the farm. The distillery operated until it was shut down by Prohibition. Jacob's descendants continued farming the land with a variety of crops and animals. Today, the 8th generation of Jacob's family is actively involved in all aspects of the farm.
The Farm Today:
Knapp Farm is primarily a fruit farm today. The farm's main crop is blueberries. In 1985, Ellen and Jason Knapp, the current operators of the farm, enlisted the aid of Cornell University to begin a small commercial blueberry planting. Marvin Pritts of Cornell's Horticultural Sciences Department advised the Knapps on site selection, varietal selection, and sound cultural practices. Today, this planting is at full production and benefits from integrated pest management techniques and trickle-drip irrigation. Varieties in this planting include Blue Crop, Blue Ray, Northland, and Patriot."

About Us
Mehrabyan Nursery is on a mission to bring delicious fruit trees to every home, orchard and farm. Coming from Armenia, our sunny country with a rich variety of bright, delicious and fragrant fruits, we wanted to share our love for growing fruit trees in our local community in Ithaca and beyond.
Whether it's your first time buying a fruit tree or your tenth, we bring you carefully sourced, quality apples trees at affordable prices to make your fruit tree buying experience a joyful one.
Mehrabyan Nursery was created by Surik Mehrabyan. After a career in physics research at Cornell University, Surik decided to start his own orchard and planted 80 fruit trees in his backyard in Ithaca, NY, much like in his home village in Armenia.

About Us
Organic veggies available at the Ithaca Farmers Market or through our CSA.
nook & cranny farm is a small scale, intensively managed vegetable farm in the town of Caroline serving the Brooktondale and ellis hollow communities since 2008. Offering diverse, bountiful, and high quality vegetable csa from mid-April through December, with separate spring, summer and fall shares. CSA sizes are; large and small shares as well as offer a personal-sized share.
They have spent several years experimenting and optimized growing in hoop houses and low tunnels. High quality greens, brassicas and roots are freshly harvested in both early spring and late fall. During the summer hoop houses are used to grow heat-loving tomatoes, peppers and eggplant as well as early carrots, zucchini and beans. Several staple vegetables (potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, broccoli, kale, lettuce) are included in the shares most weeks during the growing season. Crops and animals are tended by a dedicated, idealistic and hard-working crew. They are committed to producing great food to feed they're comrades!
Additionally, nook & cranny strives to be sustainable; constantly improve our soil through rotations, cover cropping, heavy mulching, and addition of organically-approved rock amendments and composted manure,. Farm work is accomplished mostly hand-powered, relying on two-wheeled BCS tractors for soil work, and thus maintain a low carbon footprint. during the 2017 season used 25 gallons of gas for all on-farm activities serving csa shares to over 70 families, in addition to attending 3 farmer's markets per week, and supplying weekly produce to brookton's market.

About Us
Back in 2008, after about 30 years of hosting Thanksgiving dinner for 30 or so friends and family, we decided it was time to raise our own fresh organic turkey for this special feast. We wanted to utilize more of our 160 acres, and in some small way, contribute to the growing movement for local, sustainable, organic food. Fortunately, raising our own heritage turkeys has profoundly increased the depth of our appreciation for all our food, especially that from animals.
We’re proud of the fact that we are now able to sustainably farm our own flock. They breed naturally – no artificial insemination necessary. The eggs are laid in the field and then hatched safely in an incubator. They grow slowly and safely, moving freely outside in 5 rotational pastures protected from predators, vigorously eating organic feed, grass and insects during the day and roosting undercover at night.
Our type of turkey farming differs significantly from large-scale commercial turkey production, where the non-heritage breed Broad (Large) Breasted Whites must be bred via artificial insemination. These birds, because of their extra large breasts, are unable to run and fly. Currently 99.9% of turkey meat consumed in the USA comes from Broad Breasted Whites farmed this way. Due to selective breeding, meat on these birds grows about two times faster than heritage breeds. This means they can be harvested sooner and sold more cheaply than heritage turkeys, especially heritage turkeys like ours that are fed pricey organic feed.
Due in large part to the low price advantage of non-heritage breed turkey farming, heritage breed turkeys were on the verge of extinction by the 1990s. By raising heritage breed turkeys we’re helping preserve the genetics of precious older domesticated breeds. “You have to eat a breed to save a breed,” as they say.
But of the many good reasons that motivate us to do the hard work required to successfully raise our turkeys we think the best reason is their superior flavor. Heritage breeds taste like a turkey should – juicy with deep rich superior flavor! Try one, or a few, and know you’ll be supporting local sustainable farming, heritage breed preservation, and the Slow Food movement.
-Barb Martin
